History
Persephone is not famous for any powers, but as she goes into the underworld for one third of the year, she is responsible for the changing seasons. While in the lower world, she rules as queen. She is depicted as a young woman holding a sheaf of grain and a torch.
Many say that she was born to Zeus and Demeter, but some say she is the child of Zeus and Styx. Her most famous story started when she was in a field gathering flowers with some companions. Then, enticed by a Narcissus flower, she strayed from her group and when out of sight she was kidnapped by Hades, who brought her to his kingdom with the intention of gaining a wife. Her mother stricken with grief refused to let any crops grow and convinced Zeus to let Hades let Persephone go. But, alas, in the underworld Persephone had already ate seven seeds of a pomegranate, and as per the rules, any who eat the food of the dead must stay with the dead. Zeus finally decreed that Persephone would stay with Hades for one third of the year, thus creating the four seasons.
Before this story occurred she was a 'gay young creature who played without trouble of fear', but after upon becoming Hades's wife she changed. Gods and Goddesses were happy beings untouchable to death, thus, when taken Persephone had become 'tainted.' Because of this taint, men who are about to die turn to her in grief.
Because of her beauty many had fallen for her over the years including Adonis and Pirithous but she married Hades. She is know to have had several children. Zagreus and Melinoe, who were conceived by Zeus, and the Erinyes, who were conceived by Hades.
Another story includes her wrath turning a young lady called Mint into a herb.
